Approach

#1 Dedicated work space — To begin with, we needed to create a shared understanding of what the redesign should accomplish for our users with business objectives in mind.  We started by creating a 'war room', covering the walls with all the brand assets, Jungle Minds visuals, our brainstorming notes, ideas and sketches, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the graphic voice. Onward, the walls helped to see patterns across data & user research.

Having a 'war room' where the team can get together and see progress always helps a development team to connect dots efficiently.

#2 Defining the structure — We re-organised the information architecture for better integration of information, better search results and usability.

#3 The foundation — I then established the foundation for our design work; typography, colours, image aspect ratios and a grid. The website was not 'responsive' which deprived our users of the full experience on mobile. The set up of a 4-column, 8-column, 12-column and baseline grid helped arrange the content and enhance readability.

#4 Working towards a design system — We defined the universal usability standards and interaction designs for components.

Accessibility matters

When the design preparation was done, an in-house development team was lined up, and I started to design pages per country and segment, interviewing stakeholders to understand what we were trying to achieve for their segment and on what timeframe.  During the design and development of these new websites, making sure everyone could use the websites in terms of accessibility, was high on our list, ultimately awarding ABN AMRO with multiple usability awards in 2015 en 2016.
